The 81st Texas Legislature

Bills Defeated

Bills to re-regulate tuition at UT/Austin, allow concealed weapons on campus, allow private insurers into state-funded student health centers and mandate criminal background checks using employee arrest records in hiring, promotions and tenure decisions were defeated.

Please note that the Texas A&M Systems have voluntarily authorized regulations to use arrest records in personnel decisions. It is not at all clear that they have implemented the regulations which are of dubious on legal and constitutional grounds. If you have been subject to these regulations or know anybody that has, please contact the TFA office ASAP.
