The 81st Texas Legislature Other House Bill 2480, by House Public Education Committee Vice Chair Scott Hochberg, D-Houston, provides for agreements between a public junior college and a school district, organization or other person operating a high school to offer a course at the junior college regardless of whether the high school is located within the service area of the junior college district. The agreement can apply to a high school outside the public junior college district only if the public junior college serving that high school does not provide the requested course to the satisfaction of the school district. Senate Bill 2258, by Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, requires the commissioner of education to award grants to participating campuses to provide intensive academic instruction during the period in which school is recessed for the summer to promote college and work force readiness to students identified as being at risk of dropping out of school. The bill makes it clear that the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board will not administer the public education part of the measure. Senate Bill 2262, by Sen. Judith Zaffirini, D-Laredo, requires the Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board to establish academies at institutions of higher education to improve the instructional skills of certified teachers and train students enrolled in a teacher preparation program to perform at the highest levels in mathematics, science and technology. |
